In some cases different septs using the same surname arose in widely different areas. In other cases migration due to war dispersed them. In Gaelic times County Offaly formed part of the kingdom of Ui Failge, with the southern portion falling into Eile or Ely, ruled by the O'Carrolls. The northern portion was ruled by the O'Connor Falys, the Molloys and the MacCoughlans. The O'Dempseys were also powerful in Clanmalier. The O'Meaghers held territory in the south.
